LIEPAJA – EUROPEAN CAPITAL OF CULTURE 2027

Liepāja will be the second city in Latvia to hold the prestigious title of European Capital of Culture in 2027, following in the footsteps of Riga in 2014. The Liepāja programme, titled “(un)rest”, comprises five diverse programme lines that address crucial issues relevant to Liepāja and Europe as a whole. These five programme lines, namely “European Dream”, “Port Paradox”, “New Eyes”, “Deliberate Modesty”, and “Creative Foresight”, tell stories that are closely connected to Liepāja and its relationship with Europe.
The programme will consist of a wide range of events, including conferences, festivals, workshops, creative residencies, project competitions, concerts, performances, exhibitions, and outdoor adventures in public spaces, new cultural venues, and downgraded areas. From large-scale events catering to large audiences, to medium and small-scale events that cater to culture enthusiasts and those less familiar with the arts, all audiences will be included.
Through the diverse range of events, Liepāja aims to address crucial topics and issues that affect both Liepāja and Europe. The programme will facilitate discussions on topics that matter and showcase various art forms, promoting a deeper understanding of culture, and enriching the cultural life of Liepāja.
